The narrator, Drost, tells the story of his life in Bronze Age Scotland from his childhood as the chosen companion and help-mate of his future "king" up to his own approaching death. The author has described how the action in the story and the feelings of the characters came to her through a series of waking dreams which may well explain the realism of the narrative. In this essentially pre-Christian tale we find traces of familiar legends and myths such as the love story of Tristan and Isolde, the Celtic paradise Tir nan Og and King Arthur's beloved Avalon.
