A
Victorian history of the town from early times until the late
nineteenth century - the "present" day of the title
is 1886! The author, a native of Tarbert justifiably proud of
its long history both as a harbour and as a strategic stronghold
guarding the access to Kintyre, covers military activities in
the area until 1745 in some detail. Until then, the town was dominated
by the significance of the castle. By the nineteenth century,
Tarbert's economic prosperity was closely linked to the enormous
herring fleet that filled its harbour during the season; a whole
chapter is devoted to this trade, but the reader is also introduced
to the scenic attractions and traditions of the area.
