Livingstone's last journey was an expedition to Africa in search of the sources of the Nile which he began in 1865, funded by the Royal Geographical Society. Six years later he rejected Stanley's help and began that final, doomed trek from which there could be no return. The authors have followed his footsteps in the most authentic detail yet achieved, seeking some meaning to the enigma. The log of Livingstone's journey is deftly interposed with a finely crafted account of their own trials and tribulations; perhaps because they have written as individuals, they provide a fascinating breadth of perspective and, unconsciously, reveal much of the tension and internal conflict that gave depth to their quest. Livingstone was buried at Westminster Abbey, April 1874.
